The San Francisco Bay Area region is home to 3 main termite species, many wood boring beetle species and wood destroying fungus organisms.
We have included the following definitions and links to help you identify and understand the biology of wood destroying pests and organisms in the bay area.
Dampwood Termites are the largest of the locally found termite species. They usually infest wet wood or wood in contact with the soil. Like subterranean termites they live in the ground but do not have to travel there for moisture. Chemical treatments or baiting is usually not necessary. The common recommendation would be to remove earth to wood contacts and correct any moisture conditions that are contributing to damp wood.
Drywood Termites like to infest dry and undecayed wood, including structural lumber and dead tree limbs. Drywood Termites have a low moisture requirement and can adapt to dry conditions for long periods of time. Their colonies are smaller than subterranean termites but given time they can be just as destructive. They are usually identified by piles of fecal pellets that are pushed out of infested wood.
Subterranean Termites are extremely destructive. First they build tunnels to wooden structures, and then they burrow into those structures to obtain food. Any wood or cellulose-containing material constitutes termite food, and given time to do so, they’ll eat until nothing is left but a shell. Termites avoid light and air, so they build their colonies where you’re not likely to stumble upon them.
Subterranean Termites live in the soil and enter homes through their shelter tubes. Subs are usually first detected when they swarm. They can also be identified by their shelter tubes.
Other Common Pests
Wood Boring Beetles
Wood Boring Beetles are common throughout the bay area.
Beetles commonly attack fungus infected wood but will also infest sound wood.
Beetles are usually discovered by their exit holes and piles of dust like material which is ejected.
Exterior decks and trim as well as substructure framing are a favorite of local beetle populations.
Carpenter Ants typically infest homes that are in wooded areas or that have older trees on the property.
They do not eat the wood but will hollow out wood members to make a gallery to inhabit.
Their frass (waste) can include small wood shavings, pieces of building material and small insect pieces.
