Do I Have to Throw Out My Bed Bug Infested Mattress?
Throwing away your bed bug-infested mattress is very risky, as it can contribute to the spread of bed bugs into other rooms while moving items!
Instead of throwing your mattress away, do the following:
- Take off all the bedding and linens, carefully move them to your laundry room, and wash in high heat.
- Do not move the mattress or box spring to another area. Doing so can easily spread the bed bugs.
- Hire a bed bug exterminator to treat your home (mattress included) with heat, steam, or other treatment.
Why You Shouldn’t Throw Away Infested Items.
When you discover bed bugs in your property, take caution before throwing anything away. Tossing your mattress or box spring will not solve the problem, and moving them can be risky as it may introduce bed bugs into other rooms. If you get a brand-new mattress to replace your infested one before your property has been treated for the bugs, you can be sure your new items may well get infested, too! This is why it’s so crucial to have your entire home treated for bed bugs, not just certain spots.

Does Infested Furniture Need to Be Thrown Out?
You should not have to throw out any items whatsoever during a bed bug infestation. When your property is treated by a professional, all of your items should be salvageable. Instead of throwing out items, it’s recommended to wash what you can in a high heat washing machine. Extreme temperatures are known to kill bed bugs in all stages of their life cycle.
Even infested furniture should be OK to keep after an infestation if your exterminator has treated it. That said, if you already have old furniture in need of replacing, a bed bug infestation would be the perfect excuse to invest in new items! Simply remember to only dispose of furniture after it has been treated!
What Can Bed Bugs Infest?
Bed bugs can be unpredictable and may hide in areas you would not expect. Obviously bed bugs can infest upholstered furniture, but what about wooden pieces? Unfortunately, bed bugs are known to hide in cracks and crevices, even in your wooden coffee table or chair! With any infested item, it’s best to wait to throw them away until after your home has been treated. Trying to throw away an infested item can contribute to bed bugs spreading!
