Bed bugs are best identified by the following characteristics:

  • Reddish brown in color
  • Flat, oval-shaped bodies that can look engorged after a meal
  • The size of an apple seed, usually 5 mm
  • White, oblong, minuscule eggs (about 1 mm)

How Big Are Bed Bugs?

Throughout their life cycle, bed bugs vary in size. They can be as big as 1/4″ and as small at 3/16″. When they are adults, bed bugs can be up to 5 mm long–this is about the size of an apple seed. They can appear bigger and more red in color after feeding. Nymphs are tiny versions of adults, and bed bug eggs are nearly impossible to see. Adult bed bugs are easier to notice, especially since they typically cluster together.

Bed Bug Life Stages

Bed bugs have five stages. Eggs are oftentimes laid in mattresses or box springs, wall cracks, floorboards, and even power outlets. Once hatched, nymph bed bugs look like miniature versions of adults. From there, they will molt five times as they begin to feed. They will eventually mature into an adult bed bug.
